Movie Review: Thor Ragnarok

The music reaches a crescendo when Thor(Chris Hemsworth) finally pieces himself in the climax and battles Hela(Cate Blanchett). The music and the line up of characters - Hulk(Mark Ruffalo), Loki(Tom Hiddleston), Valkyrie(Tessa Thompson), and Heimdall(Idris Elba) - makes it a worthy climax. But there are two drawbacks. It feels like ages before we get to the finale. The second is the movie is highly predictable. Moreover, the trailer gives away the highlights of the film, and hence we get very impatient waiting for the exciting parts to unfold on the screen.

In many ways, the latest installment of Thor directed by Taika Waititi resembles the origin movie of Thor directed by Kenneth Branagh. Thor finds himself in unfamiliar environments in both films without his hammer. Thor finds humility in the first one while he finds inner strength and confidence in this one. To the credit of Taika Waititi, he has provided a much more vibrant version than the bland origin story. There are no thought-provoking conflicts but the old as hills tale of sibling rivalry.

There are two scene stealers in this installment namely Hulk/Bruce Banner and Korg. Both Thor and Hulk have been missing from MCU since the Age of Ultron. I am glad to see Hulk again both as the green monster and as Mark Ruffalo. Mark Ruffalo brings in some of the entertaining moments in this movie. The rest of the entertainment falls on Korg played by the director Taika Waititi. Korg is a giant with the simplicity of a child. Among the rest of the cast, Cate Blanchett and Jeff Goldblum stands out. Cate Blanchett as Hela makes her character interesting by giving a nuanced performance where the eccentricity is subdued but easily identifiable. Jeff Goldblum as the grandmaster impresses us with spontaneity and wit.

Overall, this movie has excellent fight scenes thanks to CGI and more funny moments than the previous Thor movies. In between these two exciting features, the film progresses very slowly which puts you off. If you are an MCU fan or an action junkie, you can watch this movie.
